Click on the name of a contest to register into it. You only need to enter an email address as your ID, and then indicate whether you want to be a follower or a challenger to the initiator of the battle. Claim the Earth as usual and your scores would be totaled up with those of your team members at the end of the contest. Check out the box score by clicking "status" of the game on your right side.
